the whole family, I guess. What do you think? how does this compare to the picks of the past, like the Chyrsler 300 (twice) and the Dodge Caravan?

The Dodge Caravan was honestly some crap, so I'd say it's progressing pretty quickly.

It's not that interesting of a choice- the Golf Mk7 has won numerous awards, including "World Car of The Year" at the New York Auto Show.
When you consider the acclaim that just a few of the individual trim lines have recieved- the GTI and TDI, particularly, it's no small wonder indeed. It's just a really good car.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 08:21 |

Lets see its in the same award class as:
2002 Ford Thunderbird
2001 Chrystler PT Cruiser
1997 Chevy Malibu
1995 Chrysler Cirrus
1980 Chevy Citation
I think the award has proven worthless over the years.

In MTs defense on this, imports weren't allowed on the list back then. They had a separate "Import of the year" award. I'd probably choose a Vega over any other 1971 domestic as well because light weight.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 08:23 |
|
That's what the do now. Before 2013, they would look around and find the absolute worst choice they could and give it the award.

Audi A3
BMW 2 Series
Ford Mustang
Honda Fit
Hyundai Genesis
Kia Sedona
Lexus RC
Maserati Ghibli
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
This was the competition. It's basically the only car that really met all needs at a reasonable price. Wow.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 08:23 |

I agree, this is a pointless award that means little to nothing. And there are a lot more interesting cars out there.
This isn't a Vega, though. It's one of the best selling cars of all time for a reason.

So, the Mustang was too obvious and they just went with the second choice?
I don't even like Mustangs that much, but a good-looking reboot that take the classic into the modern age (IRS, 4 pot turbo, etc.) and looks to expand it into foreign markets. I don't see how you could pick anything else. This just smacks of pure contrarianism.

The Golf is just as much car as everyone on this planet needs. That's why it deserves the win. (I know I'm gonna be bashed for this from the enthusiast side..I drive a Miata. I still know it's true!)

I've driven 10k very happy miles in mine. I'm still a little floored that my 6'2" 280 lb frame doesn't suffer on long road trips. I sat in a MK6 before I made the decided and the interior was a huge upgrade in the new model year. MK7 GTI uber alles!

While I think the Golf, and especially the GTI(hell, I'm strongly considering one), are pretty good cars, they're really just more of the same from the last gen. The Mustang, although not perfect, has taken a HUGE leap from the 2014MY. I live in the NorthEast... I don't want a track car...I want a road car that can handle crappy roads and potholes.

I've not driven the new one, but I drove last year's model. While it was definitely underwhelming in the power department, the build quality, practicality, and handling at normal speeds was pretty much all you need for a DD. It's a solid car, and as far as I'm concerned, getting the "Car of the Year" title from multiple outlets is totally warranted. Are there other worthy contenders? Absolutely. Are they as well rounded? Arguably, no, and that's why the Golf and all its variants take the cake.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 08:48 |

The new Golf is nice but it's no 2001 PT Cruiser or 1997 Chevy Malibu much less a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus. I guess it's actually not that impressive of a club.

I feel like this is a little bit of a cop-out, though. The Golf has 2 and 4 doors, gas, electric, diesel, and high performance models. At that point you might as well put it up against the BMW 2 and 3 series, the Audi A3/S & A5 series, etc.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 09:21 |

it is a sweet car for sure — I've driven a TDI and a TSI. But, without having driven the GTI or the R, I will say is probably rather have the Mustang. And the BMW. Motor Trend, however, doesn't use my personal choice of sportscar as criteria in its COTY selection. Still, I would have chosen the F-150, and the F-series has sold even more than the Golf!
![]() 11/13/2014 at 09:33 |

That HUGE leap forward for the Mustang just made it on par with cars that have had many of the "NEW" Mustang features for years (or even decades).

I have driven the GTI and it was very underwhelming. The interior is nice but I found the stick to be notchy and not precise (compare to the silkyness of the Focus ST). After getting out of my WRX the GTI was just not fun to drive.

To me the reason not to pick the Mustang is it has a narrow focus and just doesn't seem a huge improvement over the previous model to me.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 09:56 |

The F-150 wouldn't be eligible otherwise I would probably agree. The Cadillac and Porsche are trims not new models.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 09:57 |

Wasn't the Renault Alliance COTY in the 80's??? I love the GTI but I'm not so sure this is real prestige...
![]() 11/13/2014 at 10:05 |

I get what you're saying here, trully. It's the reason why there are so many different models of cars for sale in every market- different spokes for different folks.
That said, I have driven the GTI, and given the driving experience coupled with the interior quality, hatchback versatility, refinement, and technology, I would personally choose it over a Mustang, which I like, and the BMW, which I also like.

![]() 11/13/2014 at 10:39 |

As someone who talks with car buyers everyday, not once has a customer said "I want X car because it won an award in a magazine." So I think these things are pretty meaningless for actual car buyers. Now that being said, people have said "Well Consumer reports recommends X car but not Y car." So it seems CR is on to something.
As for the Golf...given that I just ordered a '15 GTI with Performance Package for myself, I say it is a fine choice. The problem is again this award really won't help sell Golfs. You either want a Golf/GTI or you don't. No one is really "on the fence" about it. Just a fun bit of information, I shopped a Golf lease for someone who wanted an A3 but didn't think they could afford it. The $25k Golf was only $10 cheaper per month than the $38k A3 with the same lease terms and down-payment.

Wow, lots of Mustang fans have the sads. Funny how one can simultaneously say "everyone knows this award is stupid" and "my favorite car should've won this award" in the same comment.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 11:24 |
|
This was all based on brand new cars for 2015 only, correct? I don't think too many people make their new buying decision on car of the year but I have heard it when someone is trying to justify their purchase to me.
Me: you bought a 96 Chrysler Cirrus?
Them: It got motor trends car of the year in 1996.
Me: And hitler got the cover of Time magazine...
![]() 11/13/2014 at 11:33 |

This is why you should always be very skeptical about any magazine that reviews cars when, at the same time, it solicits advertising dollars from the companies who manufacture those cars.
You know who, in a million years, would never have given triumphant accolades to the Chevy Vega? Consumer Reports, that's who.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 11:36 |
|
In MT's defense, GM paid millions to them for advertising. I'd probably choose the Vega over other cars because it'd be suicide to point out that the Vega was a beautiful pile of crap.

Tom,
I found that out myself when I was looking for a cheap commuter car. An employee deal with 0 down/15k per year lease on an $18,000 base Golf with a stick was $289 per month all in. That is insane when I can get a loaded $24,000 Focus SE for $179 per month. VW credit is not helping Golf sales at all. I loved the way it handled and it was a fun ride but not at that price!!
![]() 11/13/2014 at 12:00 |

IIRC, the early 70's vettes were still pretty good. Its the mid-lates 70's and early 80's that I remember being much less desired; emissions, that dreaded cross-fire injection, etc...

That detail did skip my mind, I have been out of the vette knowledge database for a few years since I trade my '94 Corvette. There was always the luggage rack on its "trunk" location ;). And I think there was a "cavity" in the coupe for storing small things like a backpack or behind the seats, please verify. Regardless, definitely not ideal for storing bodies!
